Peace one day October 20, 2009
By 2007, the UN estimated that over 100 million people from all walks of life actively supported Peace Day around the world. That same year, Peace One Day was instrumental in securing the conditions by which mass polio vaccinations could be carried out in Afghanistan on Peace Day; 1.4 million children were vaccinated in some of the most remote areas of the country. And in 2008, an additional 1.6 million were treated. That’s an estimated 3 million children in Afghanistan alone – on Peace Day.
On Peace Day 2008 in Afghanistan the United Nations Department for Safety and Security, which monitors security related incidents, recorded a 70 per cent reduction in violent incidents on the day itself.
The bicycle, symbolic and practical? October 19, 2009
Blog action day Since we were little children most of us learned how to ride a bike. It was the first time freedom was felt. To taking off the training wheels, to riding around the block, the world never seemed so exciting till those moments. “On bikes kids quickly expand there territories. Neighborhoods that were once far away are now close and spaces for new independent adventures open up,”Chris Carlsson. What happened? Why do we, as a society, now see a bikes as a toy? Children are our future. The only way i see real change is to start with them. I have learned that adults minds take a lot more time and work to accept new ideas. This is why I believe that it is important to influence and focus on children. With children there minds are like sponges. If we show our kids how important it is to ride a bike and show them how they can help the environment then I can only see positive things happening. For example, exercise, exploring new territories and developing a sense of independece. It may not be the quick fix, and it will take a lot of time and patience. Moving way to fast in life is one of the things I believe that gets us in trouble. My theory is that we are such in a rush to get from here to there. Many of the times I feel we are rushing to each place for no other reason than to rush. We as a society have been taught that bigger, faster, and better is the way of life, but are we to far gone, lost in our selfish ways? How do we slow down?
